C/I :: TECH CAREER ACCELERATOR PROGRAM :: OVERVIEW

The Tech Career Accelerator Program is a 2-year program for students from underrepresented groups studying computer science at CUNY. The program creates a bridge between students’ junior and senior years in college and their first jobs in the tech sector by providing mentoring, career preparation, and internships.

Information for Students

Student Eligibility

We are looking for students that:

  • Have at least 2.7 cumulative GPA
  • Are studying computer science, math, or related degree at CCNY or Lehman Colleges
  • Are interested in working as a software engineer or related field after graduating
  • Starting your junior year in the fall 2018 with an expected graduation date in 2020
  • Come from a family with annual income less than $75K/yr, and a member of a traditionally underrepresented group in the tech sector (women, African American, Latino)
  • Are eligible to work in the United States
  • Are at least 18 years old
  • Ability to make specific program commitments (details below)

Student Expectations

If selected to participate in TCAP, students must:

  • Continue to maintain at least a 2.7 cumulative GPA through graduation
  • Correspond with weekly mentor outreach
  • Meet in person with mentor once per month
  • Participate in all required events (see below)
  • Complete any assigned work prior to events
  • Complete technical course by the deadline
  • Apply to engineering internships for summer of 2019
  • Apply for full time work or continuing studies after graduating in 2020

If these expectations are not met, students will meet with TCAP leadership to determine continued participation in the program.

Information for Mentors

Mentor Eligibility

We are looking for mentors who have:

  • At least two years of work experience as a software engineer (or related engineering role)
  • A bachelor’s degree or higher (preferably in Computer Science or related degree)
  • Passion for increasing the level of diversity and inclusion in the tech industry
  • Ability to make specific program commitments (details below)
  • Planning to live in NYC for at least the next year

Mentor Expectations

If selected to participate in TCAP, mentors must:

  • Correspond weekly with mentee
  • Meet with mentee in person once per month
  • Participate in all required events (see below)
  • Volunteer to help run at least one event per year (either professional development series or hackathon)

If these expectations are not met, mentors will meet with TCAP leadership to determine continued participation in the program.
