Code/Interactive and HIRED Inspire Teach For America Students at Mentorship Event

November 2, 2016 by

On Tuesday, October 25, 52 high school students from four Exploring Computer Science Fellows’ classes gathered at Teach For America’s lower Manhattan office for a mentorship event organized by Code/Interactive and Hired, Inc.

Students heard stories and advice from a panel of tech leaders, including Michelle Abreu, Sales Manager at Instinctive, Tyrone Hinderson, Software Engineer at Reonomy, Larry Adames, Software Engineer at Tunecore, and Andre Charoo, VP of New Markets, Hired Labs at Hired. Afterwards, students enjoyed 1:1 mentorship sessions with candidates placed via Hired’s platform; opening a new new network of tech professionals to chart their potential career paths.screen-shot-2016-11-02-at-11-11-36-am

Students from DreamYard Preparatory High School, The Urban Assembly School for Applied Math and Science, Wings Academy High School, and Uncommon Preparatory High School attended this event to give real-world perspective to the concepts that they’re learning in computer science classrooms. According to some students, it helped to pique their interests.

“I might actually consider going into tech now.” Reported one student from Uncommon Preparatory High School during the closing session. “I never really saw myself in their shoes before, but my mentors opened my eyes to new possibilities.”

Teach For America Computer Science Fellows are alumni of the program who teach the Exploring Computer Science curriculum to their students while advocating for broadening participation in computer science in low-income communities. The CS Fellows initiative, lead by Cullen White, the Director of Computer Science at Teach For America, has already expanded computer science programs to several sites around the country with funding from the National Science Foundation.

Teach For America alumni Tom O’Connell (Houston ’10), now the VP of Programs and Partnerships at Code/Interactive, and Michaela Osofsky (Baltimore ’09), Senior Talent Advocate at Hired, Inc, organized the event with help from Teach For America’s staff.
