C/I students from the Bronx Center for Science and Mathematics joined thousands of Microsoft fans from across the nation, including Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Microsoft COO Kevin Turner, deputy NYC mayor Richard Buery, and NYC CTO Minerva Tantoco, to celebrate the opening of the flagship 5th Avenue Microsoft Store.
C/I students heard from Microsoft Technical Evangelists Maria Naggaga and James Quick about what it’s like to work at Microsoft and how they worked hard in school and continued learning to code to succeed in their jobs. Students learned about the history of Microsoft, then Maria and James answered student questions about the future of technology.
After our career panel, students received the first ever school tour of the Microsoft Flagship 5th Avenue Store, with product demos like the Surface Pro 4, Surface Book, XBox Live, MineCraft, and Alienware gaming computers in the Dell Experience Store on the 3rd floor of the building. Students played with the Microsoft Band and learned about amazing software that they can use for free while they are still in school.
All of our BCSM students walked away with a profound sense of respect for Microsoft’s products and employees, as well as a suite of free Microsoft software courtesy of the DreamSpark program that empowers youth all over the world to learn how to code. Several students said that they felt inspired to enter the Imagine Cup, a technology program and competition that provides opportunities for students across all disciplines to team up and use their creativity, passion and knowledge of technology to create applications, games and integrate solutions that can change the way we live, work and play.
Hopefully students get to see James and Maria at our C/I events this year and all of them end up with amazing jobs at Microsoft using their new coding and technological literacy skills!
