Office Visit: C/I Goes to Venmo

October 22, 2015 by

On Wednesday, October 22nd, C/I students from Fannie Lou Hamer Freedom High School took a field trip to Venmo’s NYC office at 95 Morton St. For many students this was there very first introduction to Venmo, a mobile and social payment application that makes it seamless for consumers to make and share payments with their mobile phones.

Katie Mulligan, from the People Operations Team at Venmo, led the students through the office with some entertaining stops along the way, including a workout studio, video game space, and meeting rooms named after money inspired idioms. Students were enthralled by the live data stream and drawing inferences from the feed.

Our hosts talked with students in small groups, exchanging valuable knowledge about what it is like to work at a company like Venmo. Students also shared their experiences with coding so far and received a lot of praise and encouragement from their new Venmo mentors. Some students even learned to hack a Cookie Clicker game. Yum!

After 30 minutes of great conversations, students shared what they learned from their visit.

“I wanted to thank you for showing us that even though coding may be difficult at times, there are a lot of doors that can open up for you if you stick with it”

“I want to acknowledge how openly and positive you all are. You would think at a company everyone would be competing against each other, but you all work together and really know each other.”

“I like how at one point you found CS difficult but you stuck with it a reached your goal”

Thanks so much for all of our Venmo panelists and hosts. Hopefully we’ll see you all again soon!
